• High Blood Pressure-Hypertension

Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, we commonly see patients with high blood pressure, also called hypertension, which is a common health condition with a variety of causes and treatments.

In most people, blood pressure rises and falls throughout the day. In a person with hypertension, blood pressure stays high over time. This can be dangerous because it makes the heart work too hard and can increase the risk for heart disease, kidney disease, and stroke.

The risk for developing high blood pressure goes up as people age.

At Lahey, some of the ways we help patients lower their blood pressure is with:

    • Weight control. Blood pressure rises as body weight increases, so losing weight can help decrease blood pressure.
    • Healthy eating. This can reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure and lower a blood pressure that is already too high.
    • Being physically active. This can involve something as basic as doing household chores or more organized activities such as sport, bicycling, gardening, or just taking brisk walks.
    • Blood pressure medications. Sometimes doing all of these things still isn’t enough. There are many different options for proven, safe medications to lower blood pressure. Lahey experts can help determine which might be the best option for you.
