• Chancroid

Gram stain of Haemophilus ducreyi bacteria grown from blood culture.Chancroid, caused by the bacteria Haemophilus ducreyi, is one of the genital ulcerative STDs. Others include syphilis and herpes simplex virus (HSV). Chancroid is prevalent in Africa and parts of Asia, and has been shown to be a risk factor in the transmission of HIV. It is likely that chancroid is underreported in the United States because most laboratories are incapable of accurately culturing H. ducreyi through current methods, therefore making chancroid diagnosis difficult. Single-dose oral antibiotics easily treat chancroid, although patients co-infected with HIV may require longer treatment than usual.
