Lahey Hospital & Medical Center is committed to meeting the unique needs of older adults and their loved ones. We provide evidence-based, age-sensitive nursing care for our older patients, which leads to the best possible clinical outcomes.
Because of this commitment to elder care, Lahey received designation as a NICHE institution in January 2010.
What is NICHE?
NICHE, which stands for Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders, is a nationwide effort aimed at meeting the special healthcare needs of older adults. In order to receive the NICHE designation, a team of Lahey Clinic nurses completed a rigorous training program and developed an action plan that was submitted to The Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing, New York University College of Nursing.
The NICHE Difference
NICHE hospital staff are more knowledgeable and qualified in caring for older adult patients and as a result, NICHE hospitals have higher patient and family satisfaction overall. The program helps hospitals to:
- Implement interdisciplinary evidence-based strategies and methods to address issues specific to older patients
- Improve patient outcomes
- Increase patient and family satisfaction levels
Geriatric Concerns Addressed by NICHE
The NICHE program at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center offers evidence-based nursing strategies to address the following geriatric concerns that may affect the hospitalized geriatric patient:
- Fall prevention or fear of falling
- Sleep issues
- Pain control
- Safety and comfort
- Bladder and bowel issues
- Skin integrity/breakdown
- Medication management
Nurses are in a unique position to work with patients and their families to provide quality care. The NICHE program gives nurses and other members of the healthcare team the knowledge and resources to help meet the specialized needs of hospitalized older adult patients and their families.
