Curtis Bakal, MD, MPH, Named Chair of Diagnostic Radiology at Lahey Clinic

BURLINGTON, MA—Lahey Clinic is pleased to announce the appointment of Curtis W. Bakal, MD, MPH, as chair of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology. Dr. Bakal is a recognized expert in the field of vascular and interventional radiology.

Dr. Bakal has an extensive background in radiology. Most recently, Dr. Bakal was the vice chair of radiology and a professor of radiology at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark. He also held the position of director of the Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology at Continuum Health Partners in New York City. Other previous hospital appointments include, chief of vascular and interventional radiology at Montefiore Medical Center in New York and professor of radiology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

“Dr. Bakal is a seasoned professional in the field of diagnostic radiology,” remarked Mark Silverman, MD, chair, Division of Hospital-Based Departments at Lahey Clinic. “He brings to Lahey tremendous clinical, administrative, research and teaching experience.”

Dr. Bakal's post-doctoral training includes a fellowship in nuclear medicine and a residency in radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital, and a residency in public health at the New York City Health Department. He also completed a clinical fellowship in angiography and interventional radiology at New York Medical College.

Dr. Bakal's major research interests include peripheral vascular disease and clinical practice guidelines for interventional radiology. He is widely published, and is on the editorial board of the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology. He is also the senior editor of a popular vascular and interventional radiology textbook.

Dr. Bakal is an active member of several professional societies, including a fellow of the American College of Radiology and the Radiology Council of the American Heart Association. He is also the past-president of the Society of Interventional Radiology.

Dr. Bakal received his bachelor's degree from Yale College and his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. He also has a master's degree in public health from Harvard School of Public Health. He is board certified in diagnostic radiology and public health and is an examiner for the American Board of Radiology.
