Delivering That Much-Needed Smile

Maria Petkiewich

Maria Petkiewich named Lahey Hospital & Medical Center’s May Colleague of the Month

Anyone who has visited the cafeteria or Jazzman’s Café in Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in Burlington, is sure to remember Maria Petkiewich’s bright smile and contagious laugh. Her bubbly personality and desire to help her customers and fellow colleagues earned her the Colleague of the Month Award in May.

Petkiewich moved to the United States from her native El Salvador in August 2001. When she started working as a dish washer at Lahey later that year, her manager Linda Clay remembers a shy woman who didn’t say much because she was still learning English.

“As her English improved, Maria just blossomed, and she became very confident and outgoing,” said Clay. “Maria is kind to everyone and always has a smile on her face. She had a dream to speak in public in English and now does so regularly.”

Maria, the epitome of outgoing, works as the cashier in the cafeteria or in Jazzman’s Café. While she is always joking and lighthearted, she takes the job she has very seriously.

“You don’t know how the people are coming to you; they may be sick, and they need to see a smile,” said Petkiewich. “This is very important. So when I am at the register, I always smile. I always feel happy because I want to help people.”
