Lahey Clinic, North Shore opens new wing, adds services, conveniences, staff to enhance patient care

PEABODY, MA—Improving access to health care for the north shore, Lahey Clinic Medical Center, North Shore, today unveiled its newly constructed outpatient wing in Peabody during a special ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The 65,000 square foot, family-friendly, three-story wing, attached to the existing structure, features new patient services such as pain management, a Sleep Disorders Center and a Spine Center. The Sophia Gordon Cancer Center has more than doubled its infusion area to include 18 new bays. In addition, existing services for orthopaedic surgery, cardiology and primary care have acquired new space with needed room to grow.

Lahey's emergency department--the only one in Peabody--gains a fast track unit with four separate treatment rooms designed for patients with lesser acuity conditions and who can be diagnosed, treated, and discharged without the long waits and delays experienced in many hospital emergency rooms.

To make the patient registration process more convenient, a decentralized system now allows patients to go straight to their scheduled appointments without first checking in at a central station.

Renovation of more than 31,000 square feet in the main building, to accommodate more advanced technologies for clinical departments, begins later in the summer and is slated for completion next year. A redesigned lobby and ample space for radiology, surgery, lab, a breast center, and cardiac diagnostic equipment are also part of the planned renovation.

Both the expansion and upcoming renovation are environmentally friendly and create a supportive ambiance for patients and staff.

More than 20 physicians and 100 other health care professionals, including nurses, technical and clerical personnel, are being hired over the next five years to staff the new wing and new services.

Lahey opened the Peabody facility 15 years ago, and since then outpatient visits have increased by more than 300 percent. Same-day surgeries have increased by more than 600 percent. This increase in demand, coupled with the significant growth in the population of residents age 45 and older in the north shore, and the general trend for outpatient health care, were the driving forces behind the expansion.
