Lahey Clinic Foundation Appoints Greg Schmergel to its Board of Trustees

Burlington, MA (July 26, 2016) – Lahey Health announced today the addition of Greg Schmergel to the Lahey Clinic Foundation Board of Trustees. He will provide governance and leadership to Lahey Hospital & Medical Center and its senior leadership team, furthering the hospital’s mission to provide high-quality, cost-effective care for the communities it serves.

The Lahey Clinic Foundation board supports Lahey Health’s tertiary hospital, Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, and focuses primarily on the establishment of policies and procedures regarding hospital operations, patient care quality and satisfaction, the provision of clinical services, ensuring compliance with all accreditation requirements, physician credentialing, philanthropy, fundraising, and community service planning in a manner responsive to local community needs.

“We are extremely pleased to welcome Greg Schmergel to our Board of Trustees,” said Ann Marie Connolly, Chair of the Lahey Clinic Foundation Board of Trustees. “His strategic acumen, along with his entrepreneurial spirit, will strengthen Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in the future and greatly enhance our mission to ensure health care is more accessible and affordable for everyone.”

Greg Schmergel is a dynamic leader who brings a wealth of technological, strategic and consultative expertise, along with an entrepreneurial eye, to the Lahey Clinic Foundation board. Currently he is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Nantero, the world leader in carbon nanotube electronics.  Prior to co-founding Nantero, Schmergel was the Senior Vice President, Corporate Strategy for About.com, the largest source for expert content on the internet, and at the time its fifth largest web property. He also served as CEO of ExpertCentral.com, a company he founded in 1988 to provide consumers and businesses with access to thousands of experts across a wide array of topics. The company was acquired by About.com in 2000.  Previously, he was a Case Team Leader for Bain & Company, where he led consultant teams working on strategy and implementation issues for a number of Fortune 1,000 companies. Schmergel continues to support the entrepreneurship and business communities as a guest speaker at entrepreneurship classes and groups, Venture Partner at Rubicon Venture Capital, and through his Board membership on the Mass Technology Leadership Council.  In 2006, Schmergel was selected as the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award winner in New England in the emerging technology category.

Schmergel holds an AB in Government from Harvard University and an MBA from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration.  He lives in Lincoln, MA, with his wife and two children.

“I have always admired Lahey Hospital & Medical Center for its innovative model of care, and have seen first-hand the wonderful attention members of my family received there,” said Schmergel.  “I’m honored to join the Lahey Clinic Foundation board, and look forward to continuing to support the hospital’s mission to provide the best possible care for the communities it serves.”
