Lahey Clinic Names Howard Grant, JD, MD, Next CEO

Burlington, Mass. – September 17, 2010 – Lahey Clinic's Board of Trustees has selected Howard R. Grant, JD, MD, to be Lahey's next president and chief executive officer. Grant, currently executive vice president and chief medical officer at Geisinger Health System, will succeed David M. Barrett, MD, who has led the Clinic since 1999.

“Dr. Grant understands and appreciates the integrated health care delivery model, and will bring this knowledge and expertise to Lahey,” said Irving E. “Chip” Rogers III, chair of Lahey's Board of Trustees. “With a strong background in clinical operations, his first priority is and always will be on quality. He is a great fit for Lahey.”

At Geisinger, a group practice with 60 locations and 1200 providers, including three hospital campuses, Grant was responsible, with his administrative colleagues, for operations and budgets for 27 clinical service lines, strategic planning, and physician and administrator recruitment. He was also charged with aligning clinical operations with Geisinger Health Plan, a not-for-profit insurance company based in Danville, Pennsylvania.

Prior to joining Geisinger, Grant had a long tenure at Temple University Health System in Philadelphia, where he served in a succession of leadership roles, including chief medical officer. He was responsible for performance improvement, risk management and patient safety; integration of clinical and operational programs across multiple facilities; and clinical leadership of case and disease management.

“Dr. Grant brings impressive credentials and a track record of growth and performance improvement in health care,” said Jim Henderson, vice chair of Lahey's Board of Trustees. “His experience managing the operational challenges affecting health care organizations today makes him the right choice to help shape Lahey's future.”

Grant, a lawyer as well as a physician, began his medical career at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. In addition to serving as a staff pediatrician, he directed quality assurance, risk management and utilization management programs. From 1992 to 1997, he served as corporate vice president for medical affairs at the Chester County Hospital in West Chester, Pennsylvania.

“Lahey Clinic has a history of innovation, and a medical staff which possesses a wealth of clinical expertise,” said Grant. “I feel privileged to be offered the opportunity to serve the Lahey Clinic. I look forward to helping Lahey strive for excellence in patient care and service, and I expect Lahey to continue to grow and lead in the New England region.”

Grant earned both his medical and law degrees from George Washington University. He holds a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Pennsylvania. He completed his pediatrics residency at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He is a member of the American Medical Association and the American College of Physician Executives, and is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Grant was selected after a national search that began last April with the counsel of Heidrick & Struggles executive search. The Board of Trustees initiated the search for a new president and CEO as part of a planned succession when it was announced that Barrett would be stepping down after more than a decade of leadership at Lahey. Grant will begin his new role at Lahey on November 15.
