BURLINGTON, MA—The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association's Get With The Guidelines program has again awarded Lahey Clinic’s stroke service the Stroke Gold Performance Achievement Award in using evidence-based guidelines for stroke patient care, marking the hospital’s third consecutive gold award. Lahey Clinic, which is designated as a primary stroke service by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, has received this award for the past two years as well.

Get With The Guidelines is a hospital-based quality-improvement program that helps ensure consistent application of the most recent American Heart Association/American Stroke Association scientific guidelines for patient treatment, and includes in-hospital modules for heart failure, stroke and resuscitation as well as a module for outpatient practices. The program also addresses coronary artery disease and heart failure.

The award acknowledges commitment and success in implementing nationally accepted treatment standards and protocols for stroke. In addition, the award, which includes a Gold and Silver category, recognizes hospitals that have achieved at least 85 percent compliance with Get With the Guidelines measures and standards. Only those hospitals meeting 85 percent compliance or higher for 24 consecutive months are awarded the Gold Performance Achievement Award.

“With a stroke, time lost is brain lost,” said Kinan Hreib, MD, PhD, director of Lahey’s Stroke Service. “This award recognizes the important element of time and at Lahey, our team has developed a comprehensive system for rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients.”

According to the American Stroke Association, each year approximately 700,000 individuals suffer a stroke. Of these, 500,000 are first attacks and 200,000 are recurring. Of those who survive a stroke, 21 percent of men and 24 percent of women die within a year and for those age 65 and older, the percentage is higher.
