IBD Center
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Center
The Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Center is located in a state-of-the-art space on the 6th floor of Lahey Hospital & Medical Center. The Center prioritizes comprehensive and personalized care for IBD patients to manage their inflammatory bowel disease and improve their quality of life. We recently spoke with Randall Pellish, MD, Gastroenterologist and Director of the Center.
Tell us about the space where the IBD Center is located.
Our goal in creating the IBD Center is to simplify the process for patients receiving care for IBD and help them to navigate their illness. I can’t stress the word navigate enough — we are able to offer multidisciplinary care solely focused on treating IBD, involving gastroenterologists, colorectal surgeons, an IBD pharmacy team, IBD-specific psychologists, IBD-focused dieticians and an IBD nurse navigator who is at the center of it all to help our patients coordinate services.
We are also able to provide cutting-edge and diverse medical therapies, infusions and surgical interventions while ensuring ease of access to comprehensive care. We have enormous experience with all different types of medical therapies including infusion, injectable biologics and newer small molecules.
Lastly, there is a geographical advantage to being outside of Boston – there is less traffic and ease of parking. These may seem small, but they make a difference in the care experience.
How does this type of thinking around IBD improve the care experience?
When living with a chronic illness like IBD, it’s important to not have a fragmented care experience; rather a seamless one that allows patients to have multiple appointments efficiently scheduled under one roof. We have all the services for IBD right here, ranging from working with home infusion companies to one of the best colorectal surgery groups in the country focused on complex surgeries. The Center’s collaborative approach involves professionals sitting together to ensure coordinated and organized care.
We can make IBD care a one-stop shop where patients can see all the specialists they need to in the same location. This truly makes a difference for IBD patients who require multiple interventions, visits with doctors and diagnostic procedures.
Additionally, the Center emphasizes not only patient care but also educates other doctors in IBD and conducts research to enhance patient care.
