The doctor will ask about symptoms and health history. A pelvic exam will be done. Fibroids can be found during the exam. This is enough to make the diagnosis.

Other tests may be done to find out the size, number, and location of the fibroids. This can be done with:

  • Transvaginal ultrasound—A smooth probe is inserted into the vagina to take pictures using high frequency sound waves
  • CT Scan —An x-ray and computer are used to make pictures of structures inside the body
  • MRI scan —Magnetic waves are used to make pictures of structures inside the body
  • Hysteroscopy —A scope is inserted through the vagina to view the cervix and uterus
  • Laparoscopy —A scope is inserted through a small cut near the navel to view inside the belly
  • Hysterosalpingography —A X-ray and contrast material are used to view the inside of the uterus and fallopian tubes
