Screening is done to find a problem and treat it early. Tests are given to people who do not have symptoms but who may be at high risk.

Screening Guidelines

Barrett’s esophagus is a change in the cells just above the stomach. This change is due to acid reflux. People who have it need to be screened for esophageal cancer. The screening is done with an upper GI endoscopy. This procedure allows the doctor to check the esophagus and collect tissue samples. The tissue is then examined under a microscope.
