Lahey Hospital & Medical Center Advances State-of-the-Art Robotic Surgery Program

New Technology Will Further Opportunities For World-Class Care For Patients

Burlington, MA – Lahey Hospital & Medical Center (LHMC) this month furthered its robotic-assisted surgery program with the addition of the state-of-the-art da Vinci 5 surgical system, reinforcing its commitment to advancing innovations in healthcare technology in its mission to deliver extraordinary care to its patients.

LHMC is one of 14 hospitals globally and the exclusive site in New England to offer this multiport advanced robotic platform aimed at providing patients with minimally invasive, safer surgeries and improved outcomes.

Susan Moffatt-Bruce, MD, PhD, president of Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, said the hospital was chosen to debut the technology as a result of its world-class reputation as a center for robotic surgical excellence.

“Lahey Hospital & Medical Center is proud to be at the forefront of the advancement of cutting-edge surgical innovation, and our Robotic Surgery program has surpassed 10,000 total robotic operations,” Moffatt-Bruce said. “We are firmly committed to investing in new ways to offer surgeries that are safe and effective for our patients and ensure the overall patient experience.”

The addition of this new technology expands Lahey’s fleet of robotic surgical platforms to four. The new system will be utilized for select colorectal, gynecologic, thoracic, urological and some general surgeries.

Robotic-assisted surgery enables physicians to employ the use of robotic arms through incisions, allowing for greater range of motion and visionalization compared with traditional surgery. The new technology includes advances designed to improve patient outcomes and shorten recovery time, enhance the experience for surgeons to allow for greater precision, and expand computing power and data capabilities.

Lahey Hospital & Medical Center is at the forefront of robotic surgery, utilizing the technology in nine surgical specialty areas, including gynecology, oncology, thoracic surgery, colorectal surgery, general surgery, transplant surgery, ENT (ear, nose and throat), cardiac surgery and urology. The December 2023 milestone of Lahey’s Robotic Surgery program surpassing 10,000 total robotic operations with the da Vinci Surgical System ranks it in the top 10 percent nationally for volume of procedures.
