Ultrasonography Predicting Outcomes in Patients with Severe Median Neuropathy of the Wrist Undergoing Carpal Tunnel Release

The purpose of this study is to determine if ultrasound images and measurements can help predict whether individuals with severe carpal tunnel syndrome, who undergo carpal tunnel release surgery, will have a favorable response to the surgical procedure. Previous studies have shown that following carpal tunnel release surgery, patients with severe CTS have persistent or some reduction of symptoms compared to those with moderate CTS, who, on average, have no symptoms. Patients who are enrolled in this study will have an ultrasound of their wrist before their carpal tunnel release, 6 weeks after the release, and 6 months after their release. The total time patients will be enrolled is 6 months.
