Martin S. Maron, MD is Director of the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center and is an internationally recognized expert and leader in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Dr. Maron was for 20 years the Director of the highly regarded Tufts Medical Center HCM program that he developed from its inception. He has an interest and expertise in virtually all aspects of HCM, is responsible for defining MRI imaging in this disease and novel drug therapies, presently as the principal investigator for the new aficamten myosin inhibitor initiative. Dr. Maron has been a prolific and important clinical investigator, redefining HCM as a treatable disease compatible with normal longevity publishing over 250 peer-reviewed papers in the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, Circulation, and JACC. He was also recognized as “HCM Physician of the Year” in 2011 by the national patient organization (HCMA) and has been named a Boston Magazine  “Top Doctor” since 2017.

Ethan Rowin, MD is Associate Director of the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center and a recognized expert in HCM with 10 years of clinical experience. He specializes in cardiac imaging, including MRI for HCM, as well as the management of atrial fibrillation which is particularly common in this disease. His clinical research has been voluminous, now with 130 publications defining the clinical presentation, course, natural history, and modern treatment of HCM. Dr. Rowin was named a Boston Magazine  “Top Doctor” in 2021.

Barry J. Maron, MD is the senior member of the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center team and the world authority on HCM whose investigations in all aspects of the disease have encompassed 50 years, beginning with 20 years as Senior Investigator at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dr. Maron is considered by many as the “father of HCM” and, in fact, is the father of Martin Maron, the HCM Center’s program director. He holds the academic rank of professor at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center as well as the Mayo Clinic, has more than 1,100 publications and numerous career achievements awards for his work on HCM from the American College of Cardiology and Heart Rhythm Society. In 2022, Dr. Maron received a ranking within the Top 100 American scientists in medicine (not limited to cardiology) by Research.com.

Lahey HCM (Myectomy) Surgery

High-benefit, low-risk myectomy surgery is an important element in the care for symptomatic obstructive HCM patients and is offered at Lahey with Dr. Prem Shekar as the senior operating surgeon, and Chairman of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery at Lahey. Such expert surgery will reliably reverse heart failure symptoms in patients with obstruction and return most to an excellent quality of life.

Prem Shekar, MD is Chairman of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center. A nationally recognized cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Shekar has performed close to 5,000 heart surgeries and authored more than 65 peer-reviewed publications along with several book chapters. He has been performing the septal myectomy procedure for HCM for over 20 years and also specializes in aortic root and aortic procedures, minimally invasive valve surgery, aortic aneurysm surgery, complex cardiac surgical cases such as surgery for radiation-induced heart disease, carcinoid induced heart disease, adult congenital heart disease, pulmonary thromboembolism, and re-operative cardiac surgery. He is also known for his philanthropic work in cardiac surgery in Rwanda and India.
