At the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, we know that hip pain can be a special kind of misery. Hip pain can interfere with sleep, the ability to be active and overall quality of life.
The expert orthopaedic surgeons at our highly regarded Hip Care Center offer a full range of services to relieve hip pain and get patients moving again. We work together as a team of professionals, combining our experience and expertise to deliver the highest level of care to each patient.
Our comprehensive hip care services for patients of all ages, from adolescents through senior citizens, include:
- Diagnosis and care for hip pain in adolescents
- Hip arthroscopy (viewing inside the hip with a miniature camera through a tiny incision, to diagnose and treat a joint problem)
- Hip preservation surgery, to relieve pain and improve motion without replacing the joint
- Total hip replacement, including the Direct Anterior Approach with the Hana® Table, a state-of-the-art fracture table
- Hip fracture repair for a broken hip
- Pelvic reconstruction/correction
- Revision hip replacement and peri-prosthetic care
Among the state-of-the-art procedures we offer is the Anterior Approach for total hip replacement. In this procedure, our surgeons work between the muscles and tissues without detaching them from the hip bone or thigh bone. The result is less pain, a faster recovery and better mobility, because healthy tissue is spared from trauma.
Our orthopaedic surgeons also are experts at hip preservation surgery, especially for younger patients, in which the shape of the hip joint is changed to help relieve pain and improve motion while preserving the patient’s own cartilage/joint.
Unique at Lahey is our personalized approach to hip care. With their special expertise in all types of hip procedures, our surgeons develop a customized treatment plans from the full range of available options and based on individual needs.

Lahey is one of the few hospitals in the Boston area to participate in Medicare’s “Bundled Care” initiative for hip and knee replacements. In this model, hospitals work with physicians, home health agencies, skilled nursing facilities, and other providers to make sure joint replacement patients get quality, coordinated care.
This care includes consistent pre-surgical optimization, proven surgical techniques, team-based hospital care, and a personalized and proven post-operative plan to improve quality of life and get patients back to the activities they had been missing.
