Welcome to the Lahey Hospital & Medical Center (LHMC) Department of Anesthesiology and Interventional Pain Medicine. LHMC is a tertiary care, referral center and well known for clinical and surgical excellence.

Much of our faculty has been here for many years and we pride ourselves on fostering a collegial environment throughout the institution.

Lahey anesthesiologists have expertise in a variety of subspecialties including critical care medicine, cardiac anesthesia, transesophageal echocardiography, transplant anesthesia, regional anesthesia, and pain management.

Our diverse patient population and excellence in complex surgical procedures makes Lahey an excellent place for training in Anesthesiology. We are a national leader in liver transplants, urologic oncology, colorectal and catheter based cardiac procedures, just to name a few.

The Anesthesiology team has been training, mentoring and supporting residents from various institutions for over 30 years, and we are pleased to have our own residency program. At Lahey, residents are trained in the latest anesthesia techniques, learn to be outstanding clinicians who are compassionate, caring and competent, and are encouraged to reach their full potential, professionally and personally.

Entry into the categorical four-year program is done via ERAS and NRMP and generally only at the PGY-1 level. The residency program consists of a total of 32 residents (8 per year) which enables residents to receive extensive personal attention in a nurturing and close-knit educational environment. The world-class patient care at Lahey provides a clinical experience that is rich in depth and variety and ample opportunity for research. We look for candidates who are bright, hard-working, inquisitive with excellent interpersonal skills and a dedication to lifelong learning and excellence.

The fundamental clinical skills year is designed to prepare the candidate for a residency in Anesthesiology and, after satisfactory performance, he/she would progress to the CA-1 year. A passing score on the USMLE Step 3 is required to continue residency as a CA 1. In the CA1-CA3 years, residents rotate through subspecialties such as acute pain, regional, neuro and cardiothoracic anesthesia giving them strong exposure to all aspects of anesthetic care. The Obstetrics and Pediatrics rotations are at the renowned Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital, located in Boston, MA.

Anesthesia is an exciting field and it is continuously evolving. As the population ages and as the armamentarium of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures become less invasive but more complex, the need for our services will only increase in the years to come. Our ability to safely anesthetize an older and sicker population undergoing more complex procedures continues to improve with advances in pharmacotherapy and diagnostic technology. This evolution will require more medical knowledge and expertise, more clinical experience, and more skill from anesthesiologists. Our residency training program will prepare you for these changes and challenges.
