Helping To Shape Tomorrow’s Physician Leaders

Lahey Hospital & Medical Center is proud to partner with UMass Chan Medical School to establish UMass Chan-Lahey, the regional medical school campus in Burlington, Massachusetts. LEAD@Lahey is an innovative learning track that follows the core curriculum of the T.H. Chan School of Medicine at UMass Chan with an added focus on leadership, health systems science and interprofessional education.

LEAD@Lahey embodies Lahey’s long legacy of collaborative, relationship-centered, and team-based patient care. As one of the few physician-led hospitals in the country, our Medical Center provides the ideal environment to study the art and science of medicine, where humanity and innovation intersect; an environment where students who seek to make a difference, will be guided by faculty coaches to explore their purpose, their leadership style and strengths, and develop effective teams. Over the four years they will apply these leadership skills to real-world challenges in health care, culminating in the completion of an action project. Upon graduation, each student will have the foundational skills to lead oneself, to lead teams, and to lead organizations advocating for change in healthcare.

LEAD@Lahey’s Impact

At UMass Chan-Lahey, students will be connected to community and business leaders and Lahey/BILH healthcare executives who are addressing issues of access, equity, and social determinants of health in the diverse communities of northeastern Massachusetts. Students will be integral members of the team, applying a data driven, and change management approach to developing real world solutions that improve health for all our communities, especially those historically underserved.

Regardless of a student’s medical specialty, LEAD@Lahey’s focus on interdisciplinary, person-centered model of care, combined with the educational and research expertise of UMass Chan creates a unique culture of inquiry and innovation that nurtures future physician leaders.

The first class of LEAD@Lahey students will matriculate in the summer of 2024.
Students at UMass Chan-Lahey will be part of an exceptionally close learning community, developing camaraderie with classmates and peer mentors, faculty and educators for personalized educational opportunities. Early interactions with patients and families in their own communities will be a major focus starting in the first weeks of medical school.

LEAD@Lahey is based at the UMass Chan-Lahey regional medical campus in Burlington.
For the first 18 months of training, students will participate in the VISTA core curriculum primarily in Worcester campus, with most Wednesdays spent at Lahey and its surrounding community in northeastern Massachusetts, participating in Early Clinical Learning.
