New Institute Unites Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, UMass Chan Medical School in Shared Pursuit of Advancing Innovations in Healthcare
Burlington, MA – Allan Walkey, MD, professor of medicine and chief of the Division of Health Systems Science in the Department of Medicine at UMass Chan Medical School in Worcester, has been selected to lead the launch of the Lahey Institute for Healthcare Delivery Science at UMass Chan-Lahey Regional Campus Medical School at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center (LHMC).
The Lahey Institute for Healthcare Delivery Science, which officially launched in July, is dedicated to advancing research and innovations in healthcare delivery across the entire continuum of care, leveraging the power of a team science and learning health system approach and promoting a culture of continuous discovery and improvement. The institute builds on the partnership between LHMC and UMass Chan that led to the opening of the UMass Chan-Lahey regional campus in 2024.
“I am honored to lead the Lahey Institute for Healthcare Delivery Science as we pursue research that fosters innovative advancement in health outcomes, care delivery and population health,” Walkey said. “I look forward to working with the talented professionals at Lahey and UMass Chan-Lahey in integrating research with education and clinical practice to benefit the health of the region and contribute to the broader understanding of healthcare delivery and interventions.”
Walkey joined UMass Chan in 2023. Prior to joining UMass Chan, he spent more than 20 years at Boston University School of Medicine as founding co-director of the Evans Center for Implementation and Improvement Sciences and professor of medicine.
Walkey has served on multiple National Institutes of Health Special Emphasis Panels and grant advisory boards and served on the American Thoracic Society’s Critical Care Assembly Nominating and Planning Committees, from which he recently received the Mid-Career Achievement Award.
Walkey received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Tufts University and completed his Doctor of Medicine at UMass Chan. He earned a master’s in epidemiology from Boston University School of Public Health.
“The Lahey Institute for Healthcare Delivery Science further underscores Lahey Hospital & Medical Center’s commitment as an academic medical center dedicated to shaping the future of healthcare for generations to come,” said Susan Moffatt-Bruce, MD, PhD, president of LHMC. “We are delighted to welcome Dr. Walkey to UMass Chan-Lahey and to capitalize on his experience and expertise as we build on our strong clinical foundation to spur innovation and advance the art and science of medicine.”
Walkey will continue in his role as chief of the Division of Health Systems Science at UMass Chan Medical School as he assumes his new role as interim director of the Lahey Institute for Healthcare Delivery Science.
“We are confident that Dr. Walkey’s leadership will get the Institute off to a great start and solidify the ties between UMass Chan-Lahey and the main campus in Worcester," said Terence R. Flotte, MD, the Elizabeth Chair for the Dean of Medicine, executive deputy chancellor, provost and dean of the T.H. Chan School of Medicine at UMass Chan.
