Lahey Hospital & Medical Center Named Comprehensive Stroke Center

For Immediate Release

BURLINGTON, MA (July 17, 2018) – Lahey Hospital & Medical Center recently received its certification as a Comprehensive Stroke Center from DNV GL – Healthcare. This certification reflects the highest level of competence for treatment of serious stroke events.

“With stroke care, you must have the best clinicians and resources, but also the ability to act organizationally with extreme efficiency because of the time-critical nature of these events,” said Jayashri Srinivasan MD, PhD, chair of the Department of Neurology at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center. “This certification validates all the effort we have put into this program and to ensuring the health and safety of our patients.”

Comprehensive stroke centers are best-equipped to treat any kind of stroke or stroke complication. Stroke is caused by an interruption of blood flow to the brain or other parts of the nervous system. This deprives the brain of oxygen and vital nutrients, and within minutes, brain cells begin to die. It is estimated that 750,000 people have strokes every year in the United States, and approximately 160,000 of these strokes will be fatal. Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States.

The DNV GL – Healthcare Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification is based on standards set forth by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association, and affirms that the medical center addresses the full spectrum of stroke care – diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and education – and establishes clear metrics to evaluate outcomes. Comprehensive stroke centers are best-equipped to treat any kind of stroke or stroke complication.

“Achieving certification shows commitment to excellence,” says Patrick Horine, CEO of DNV GL – Healthcare. “And it helps demonstrate to your community that you are performing at the highest level.”
