Residency Programs
Lahey offers residencies in a wide range of specialties, with an emphasis on evidence-based medicine, patient care and research.
We believe you will find Lahey Hospital & Medical Center the ideal place to train, and we invite you to apply. Lahey Hospital & Medical Center utilizes only the ERAS System for application purposes. Applications submitted in other ways will not be reviewed.
Because of the COVID pandemic we will conduct all interviews virtually this season. We are currently exploring how best to connect with invited applicants, and ensure that they get a robust feel for our educational structure and supportive, collegial environment. The exact timing and structure is still to be determined. We recognize that the pandemic has impacted all applicants in a number of ways, and we are committed to being flexible and accommodating.
We welcome applicants from US allopathic and osteopathic schools as well as US citizens and foreign nationals from international medical schools. Our goal is to attract diverse, bright, hard-working applicants who want to train in a tertiary care medical center that values quality patient care and collegiality.

You must apply through ERAS and have first time passing scores from USMLE Steps 1, 2-CK, 2-CS (if taken) and 3 (if taken). You need to be eligible for ECFMG certification. Given the changes to USMLE exams (specifically the CS exam) because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the ECFMG requirements have been adapted to allow more flexibility, since the Step 2 CS exam is on hold. Please review the details on the ECFMG website carefully to insure you will be able to be ECFMG certified.
Competitive applicants will have minimum scores above 220 on USMLE exams. Competitive applicants will also have graduated from medical school within the last 5 years. Your three letters of recommendation should ideally come from US clinical rotations. Strong preference is given to applicants who have secured meaningful hands-on clinical experiences within the last 3 years in the US health system, rather than observerships or research fellowships. We understand that the pandemic may have impacted your options, and many clinical rotations have been cancelled or postponed. We will therefore also accept letters of recommendation from your medical school faculty. Please ask that the letters include comments about your readiness to start residency training in the US system.
We sponsor J1 visas only. We will not make exceptions, so please plan accordingly.
Because we are bound to fairness for all applicants, we cannot discuss ways in which any applicant can strengthen his or her application.
Our preliminary year positions are linked to the Tufts Neurology program. There is no separate application required, and the matching process occurs via the Neurology match. The one-year program is designed to provide residents with a comprehensive exposure to all aspects of Internal Medicine. Required hospital rotations are the same for both the preliminary and categorical program, with the exception of the required rotation at Lemuel Shattuck, and longitudinal clinic week. Our preliminary program offers a great deal of flexibility by allowing approximately 10-12 weeks of elective time. We feel elective time is crucial to allow the preliminary year intern to tailor this time for his or her future career, and can be used for a variety of inpatient and ambulatory opportunities. Our preliminary interns are an important part of our training program, are closely integrated with the categorical residents, and have been important contributors to the Lahey Hospital & Medical Center.
