The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine was formed in 2015 bringing together the previous Anatomic Pathology and Laboratory Medicine divisions with a mission to not only provide diagnostic testing, but also be a part of the integrated treatment effort. The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine provides full anatomic and clinical laboratory services and is accredited by the College of American Pathologists. The laboratory is licensed to provide services under the Medicare program and participates in interstate commerce under a CLIA license issued by the Department of Health and Human Services.
Anatomic Pathology includes twelve board certified pathologist and provides diagnostic and consultative services for the clinical divisions.
Laboratory Medicine serves the diverse and complex needs of physicians and patients from various Lahey Health locations as well as the needs of patients from other regional healthcare providers and community physicians.
Services include the Blood Bank, chemistry, microbiology, hematology, molecular diagnostics, phlebotomy, and specimen collection services & point of care testing, such as urinalysis.
The Department of Anatomic Pathology offers detection and diagnosis of disease through analysis of cell and tissue samples. The pathologists work closely with the clinicians in an effort to provide a clinicopathologic understanding of disease processes. This sometimes involves biopsy reports during surgical procedures as an intraoperative aid to the surgeon.
Our goal is to continuously improve patient safety by advancing the quality of our clinical laboratory services. Our mission is to provide patient care and community-oriented laboratory services which are scientifically sound, timely and accurate by creating systems that satisfy service expectations, ensure continued quality and enhance the understanding of laboratory medicine. We value:
The Department of Laboratory Medicine at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center is accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP). CAP is approved by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) as a deeming authority; CAP requirements are deemed as equivalent to or more stringent than CMS’s regulatory requirements. CAP inspects a laboratory in lieu of CMS. Upon successful completion of an inspection, our Laboratory was awarded CAP accreditation and became part of an exclusive group of more than 7,000 laboratories world-wide that have met the highest standards of excellence.
The Department of Laboratory Medicine serves the physicians and patients from all divisions of Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, as well as the needs of other regional health care providers and community physicians and their patients.

Lahey Hospital & Medical Center has joined with the American Red Cross Blood Services – New England Region to promote the need for blood and platelet donors. More than 15,000 units of blood, platelets, and other blood components are transfused at Lahey each year. Blood products cannot be manufactured; donations from healthy individuals are the only source. Many people who have never donated blood say it is because they have never been asked. Well, consider yourself asked.
For more information or to locate a Red Cross donor center or blood drive convenient to your home or work, visit the American Red Cross Blood Services – New England Region site.
