Transplant Social Work

Navigating the transplant process can be emotionally challenging for patients and their families. The Department of Transplantation is staffed with masters-level clinicians licensed to practice by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to provide support before and after transplant surgery.

Transplant Social Work evaluates all patients prior to transplant listing and provides support around addressing any psychosocial barriers to transplant that may arise. Transplant Social Work assists with providing emotional support, connection to community resources, family support, and coordination with the multidisciplinary transplant team.

Transplant Social Work is available in both the outpatient setting pre- and post-transplant and inpatient during your transplant admission. Please contact 781-744-2500 to speak to a member of the Transplant Social Work team

Support Group

Connecting with others has been shown to reduce the stress, loneliness and isolation that can accompany chronic illness.

Transplant support groups are led virtually by Kayla Hulburt, LICSW. Ongoing drop-in virtual groups explore pre- and post-transplant themes from a psychosocial perspective, provide emotional support, peer connection, and guidance coping with the transplant process.

The groups will occur the first Thursday of the month for kidney transplant patients and the third Thursday of the month for liver transplant patients 12:00 – 1:00pm.
