People with TMD may have:

  • Pain or muscle spasm in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) or temple
  • Problems opening the mouth fully
  • A feeling of the jaw catching or locking—when opening or closing the mouth, or while chewing
  • Popping, clicking, or grating sounds or feelings—while eating and drinking
  • Pain in the jaw, face, ear, or neck
  • Headache
  • Swelling on one or both sides of the face
  • Ringing in the ears
