Training in Complex Benign Gynecology
The Complex Benign Gynecology Fellowship at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center (formerly the Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery Fellowship) is an advanced training program designed to prepare fellows for leadership in the surgical and medical management of complex benign gynecologic conditions. This AAGL-approved fellowship provides comprehensive, high-volume exposure to advanced gynecologic surgery, multidisciplinary collaboration, and academic development within a major tertiary care center.
Lahey Hospital and Medical Center (Lahey) has a longstanding commitment to training advanced gynecologic surgeons for more than two decades and has been an AAGL-approved fellowship program since 2020. Our mission is to graduate highly skilled complex benign gynecologists and surgeons who serve as vital resources for their patients and communities.
The fellowship provides comprehensive exposure to a spectrum of gynecologic conditions, with a particular emphasis on endometriosis, fertility-related surgery, uterine fibroids, abnormal uterine bleeding, and pelvic pain. As a major tertiary care center, Lahey also offers fellows experience managing medically complex patients with coexisting gynecologic disorders.
Fellows receive balanced training in laparoscopy, robotic surgery, and hysteroscopy through high-volume surgical cases with six core faculty members (four FMIGS-trained surgeons, one REI specialist, and one gynecologist). Additional operative experience is gained through collaboration with Gynecologic Oncology and Urogynecology & Pelvic Reconstruction, ensuring comprehensive exposure to all surgical approaches, including abdominal and vaginal procedures.
Clinical proficiency in non-surgical management and perioperative care is developed through a dedicated weekly fellows’ clinic under faculty supervision.
Fellows also play an essential role in resident education, participating in daily teaching rounds, structured didactics, and simulation-based learning. Protected weekly academic time and mentorship by Gynecologic Clinician-Scientist supports scholarly activity and fulfillment of AAGL CBG Fellowship and Lahey research requirements.
