Hand Surgery Fellowship

About the Hand Surgery Fellowship

Lahey Hospital & Medical Center's Hand Surgery Fellowship is a one-year ACGME-accredited training program in hand and upper extremity surgery. Our faculty of CAQ-certified hand surgeons offers a broad clinical experience from shoulder to fingertips. Our facilities include Lahey Medical Center, Peabody with a high-volume of ambulatory cases, as well as Lahey Hospital & Medical Center's Level I Trauma Center which provides complex tertiary and inpatient care to a large surrounding area.

Trainees at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center include one hand surgery fellow, five orthopedic surgery residents from Boston University (one on the hand rotation), and medical students from Tufts University School of Medicine.

Didactics include weekly conferences, monthly journal club, and combined conferences with the Division of Orthopedic Surgery (Grand Rounds, Mortality & Morbidity, Combined Radiology/Orthopedic Surgery). There is also a monthly cadaver-based lab focusing on applied surgical anatomy and technical skills.

At Lahey, the fellow will collaborate in patient care with orthopaedic oncology, trauma, sports medicine and plastic surgery.

The fellow will have pediatric upper extremity experience through Shriner’s Hospital for Children in Boston and Springfield, MA and a 2-4 week away rotation at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Forth Worth, Texas.

Resources include the Cattell Memorial Library at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, online access to the Tufts University Hirsh Health Sciences Library and simulation laboratories for microsurgery, cadaver dissection and arthroscopy. Involvement in research is expected and facilitated by the faculty, with protected time provided.

Community service and mentoring opportunities are available through pipeline projects serving high school, college, and medical school students. These include the Posse Foundation and the OWL Project (Orthopaedic Women at Lahey).
